5 Risk Management Strategies When On Holidays

I travel a lot for my holidays and get quite worried reading the headlines of what is happening around the globe. Hence, I put forth some risk management strategies that I personally use when travelling overseas.

You can follow if you find them useful. 🙂

………………………………………………………………………………….
…………………………………………………………………………………

1)  Don’t put your money in one place

Segregate your money. Whenever I travel overseas, I segregate my money into 2 wallets.

Some of my money I left it in the safe at the hotel room. Some of my money I kept it in the hidden compartment in my bag. Most important of all, don’t put your money in one place. It is because if you lose them, you will be at your wit’s end.

2) Photocopy  your passport, flight travel itineraries, hotel bookings.

I ensure that I photocopy my passport, flight travel itineraries and hotel bookings.
I also make a back up copy on my Iphone and Ipad, either by snapping a photo or having them in my Iannotate PDF app software. (Of course, my devices are secured with a pin password)

In addition to that, I have an additional copy stored in my google drive.

If I lose my passport or any important travel documents, I will have all the documentation ready, in place.
.
.

3) Have the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Contact in your mobile phone

Alhamdulillah…. So far, I don’t need to seek assistance from Ministry of Foreign Affairs when I
travelled overseas for holidays.

However in my profession as a financial consultant, I remember assisting one of my friends claims,
when his close family member passed away overseas.

Singaporeans in distress overseas can seek consular assistance during and after regular office hours.
Before you travel overseas, check through this link to get Singapore Embassy Contact of the country you are visiting.
http://www.mfa.gov.sg/content/mfa/missions/singapore_mission/mission_locator.html

Have the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contact in Singapore at (65) 6379-8800 too, just in case.
Save it in your mobile phone now! 🙂

4) If you drive in to Malaysia, bring your steering wheel lock.
Yes. I bring my steering wheel lock when I drive in to Malaysia. I know, sometimes we take safety for granted.

As part of my risk management strategy, I use my steering wheel lock to secure my car after I park it.

In addition to that, remember not to park your car at secluded area. If you plan to dine at the restaurants nearby, ensure that your car is in plain sight of your view at all times.

.
.

5) Buy travel insurance
If there is a flight delays, flight is being cancelled, loss of baggage or due whatever reasons, you know that you will have a back up plan in place.

When you go for holidays, you want to let down your hair and have a peace of mind. Buying travel insurance is essential and necessary as part of your risk management strategies when travelling overseas.

:: Bonus Tips ::
– Read Tripadvisor Reviews of the place you want to go to. Its because some places there are a lot of pickpockets.
– If you went to Europe, intend to buy branded, high end items, bring an additional bag. Shopping bags from designer labels stores attract attention from undesired individuals.

Costs & Itinerary For Our Exotic Honeymoon To Morocco…

Costs & Itinerary For Our Exotic Honeymoon To Morocco…

Alhamdulillah. Time is ticking fast, and in a few days time, I am a married man. 🙂

I created a blog post on the costs of Malay wedding in Singapore last year, and it has garnered a lot of attention from fellow social media enthusiastics. Some lamented that my wedding costs are too high, and there are also many who argued that my figures are too conservative. Nevertheless, that is the exact wedding costs, on my side, after doing barrage of research/food tasting/interviews etc2. 🙂

After settling other big commitments like buying our BTO HDB flat, booking our wedding venue (I can only book 150 days in advance), registering and meeting the naib kadi at ROMM  and at the same time reserving our Kadi for our akad nikah,  we finally bought our air tickets to our lovely honeymoon destination which is Marrakech, Morroco.

My fiance and I will like to have all the time for ourselves thus we opt for free and easy option to relax and enjoy. 🙂

As we choose to book air tickets without itinerary, we did our own background research by using online platforms like skyscanner.com.sg, expedia.com.sg, zuji.com.sg, to make comparison of the prices of the air tickets. Unfortunately, there is no direct flight from Singapore to Marrakech, thus using such platforms aid us, in planning our journey, at the same time, plan our finance well.

After planning the route and ensuring the available connecting flights are from the same airline, we then liaised with the airline directly, to book our air tickets. It costs us SGD$1998.60 each for the airline tickets from Singapore to Marrakech via Zurich and then return back home safely, 10 days later.

Next, we plan for our hotel/riyad. I have a personal preference to have our hotel to be as close as possible to the shopping area, Djemaa el Fna which is the centre of the medina and the heart of Marrakech. What I did, is that I go to google map on my ipad, and key in “Djemaa el Fna”. It brings me here automatically.

From the map above, you can see, that there are a lot of hotels/riyads located nearby. We want value for money hotels with good services. We have some fun choosing the hotels, narrowing it down to a few good ones and then read the reviews of the hotels at tripadvisor.com. We are spoilt for choice! 🙂

Tripadvisor.com  has both good and bad reviews from people who have stayed in the hotel, that you will like to enquire.

We planned our itineraries first, and as most of our activities are of driving distance from Marrakech, we decided to just book the hotel in Marrakech for 10 nights. We booked through Booking.com and email the hotel again, to confirm that our booking went through. We arranged for airport transfers from the airport to the hotel too. The hotel stay costs $2484 for 10 nights. Of course, there are cheaper options, but we chose the best! 🙂

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

At first, we plan to spend some days in Marrakech and some days in Spain, but we then reach to a consensus to just spend our honeymoon days in Marrakech, as there are plenty of activities that we can do, like….

Cooking Class at Faim d’Epices

Hot Air Balloon, and watch the sun rise over the Atlas mountains

Camel Ride the palmeraie of Marrakesh

Quad Biking At The Dessert

There are really many, exciting activities to be done in Morrocco. Attached are our customized, yet detailed itineraries and indicative costs involved. (Right click and save target as)

Credit Cards Can Be Cloned

I remember 2 years ago, when my family and I went for a holiday in Cape Town, South Africa.

Its a very dangerous place to be in.

Crimes are rampant.

Bad place to be in.

I remember seeing all the ATM machines vacant.

and my family being cheated on the very first day at the hotel that we stay in.

Even their Macdonalds and KFCs are heavily armed with security guards.

…and usage of credit cards there for convenience?

No… No….

You can be cheated…

hahaha…I found a video in how your very own credit card can be cloned…

Be careful…
